I like the way you work it

I Like the Way You Work It by Maree Anderson (for Writers Gone Wild)

Hi all,

Last week I had to write a blog post about the recipe I submitted for Passionate Cooks: Rob's Decadent Hot Chocolate Sauce. (You can check it out over at the ARe Cafe if you're curious. It's called The Way to a Woman's Heart.) Anyway, it got me to thinking about how DH (Rob) and I first met (at a dance class I was teaching at the time) and how sexy I find men who can dance.

I'm sure I've shared some of my all-time favorite movies here on Writers Gone Wild? Many of them are dance movies, or have a dance scene in them. (I'm also a fan of gory blood-fests like Desperado, Blade, Kill Bill and From Dusk Till Dawn, but we won't go there this time *g*) And for me, there's only one thing sexier than a man who can dance: that's a man who can dance and sing.

So here's me, last few days of school holidays, promised to take the kids to a movie and wouldn't you know it? The ones we were hoping to see are all R16 or above... and DS is only 14. DD and I wanted to go see Pitch Perfect, so eventually we talked him into it... because it was either that or not go to a movie at all, and any movie (with snacks!!!) is better than sitting at home waiting for the weather to get its sh*t together so he can go out parkouring (AKA free-running) with his mates.

So how did he cope with a movie based around an all-girl singing group at a US college? He might have been the only guy in the cinema (there were about a couple of dozen girls and women at this early showing) but he enjoyed the heck out of it. Probably in great part due to the hot girls, the weird Asian chick who came out with the most bizarre stuff that would make people stop dead in their tracks, and the character Fat Amy (her name for herself, BTW, not a cruel nick-name), who had one-liners like these: "You guys are gonna get pitch-slapped sooo hard, your man-boobs are gonna concave." Love it.

DS commented after a scene with Fat Amy in a spa pool surrounded by her multiple (gorgeous!) boyfriends, that she's "very comfortable with herself, isn't she?" Yep, it was a stunning example of that old adage: if you feel sexy, then you are sexy. A good lesson for women everywhere, I think. And as DS is at that age where he's noticing girls, I'm sure he noticed the rapt looks on the girls' faces whenever certain guys in the movie sung and performed their choreographed dance moves. Who knows, he might take up dance. His future girlfriends would probably thank me if he did *g*

Pssst: Yes, guys, it is true: men who can sing are sexy. Men who can dance are sexy. But men who can sing and dance? *fans herself wildly* It's like the remix Beca and the girls sang in Pitch Perfect: "I like the way you work it, no diggity...." Oh yeah. Do I ever. No diggity.

Love!!!! We should all be so comfortable with and accepting of ourselves! How cool that your son picked up on it. Bright boy.....hmmmm, I have a lovely daughter in need of a future Mr. Right!

Liane, Rebel Wilson (the actress who plays the character of Fat Amy) is wonderful in this movie. And I'm thrilled that the confidence she portrayed made DS sit up and take notice. He's always been the kind of kid that'll come out with something unexpected that makes you view him in a new light *g* I hope he'll make some girl very happy some day!

On a side note: I notice on Wikipedia that Rebel Wilson is now a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, and has a target weight of 80kg. I wish her all the best with her goals, but I think she's wonderful just the way she is.

You know I was wondering whether to go see this movie - I love anything with singing in it. After reading your post, I'm going to make a point of not missing it. Sounds like a blast!

Anne, it's great. I laughed myself silly--helped by the fact it doesn't take itself too seriously, I gotta say. And the singing and dancing is excellent. I'm buying it for my collection as soon as it's out on DVD.
